Dental Specialties
Chapter 7. You & Your Dentist

The American Dental Association recognizes a number of different dental specialties:
Endodontics
- Disease prevention and treatment of root pulp (the living tissue that conveys sensation to the tooth)
Oral Surgeon (Maxillofacial Surgeon) - Surgical treatment of jaw and mouth injuries, diseases or tooth extraction
Orthodontics - Correcting mouth deformities or tooth irregularities, often through braces or functional appliances
Pediatric Dentistry - Care of children's teeth
Periodontics - Preventive care and treatment of structures that surround and support the teeth (Example: gums)
Prosthodontics - Rehabilitation of oral problems with such devices as bridges, crowns, or dentures
Public Health Dentistry - Control of dental disease through community dental programs

All of these specialties require at least 2 additional years of advanced training after dental school.
